Aims and Objectives
Mission Statement
To create a safe and secure environment in which pupils of secondary
age with Asperger’s Syndrome develop strategies to reach their
full potential academically, socially and spiritually.
Farleigh College Aims
- To work with boys and girls who experience particular
difficulties in communication, socialisation, social imagination and
anxiety levels, which collectively are sometimes described as
Asperger’s Syndrome.
- To work along side these young people in developing strategies to assist with these difficulties.
- To offer an environment where young people, often
with a previous history of failure, are encouraged to develop their
full academic and social potential.
- To provide sympathetic and emphatic adults who are
able to offer a secure and stimulating environment where young people
can minimise their limitation, enjoy their strengths and grow in
confidence, understanding, knowledge and skill.
- To provide a twenty-four hour curriculum that will
be stimulating and meet the individual needs of pupils with
Asperger’s Syndrome.
- To develop confidence and independence through a
structured programme of PSHE/Citizenship studies so that the young
person may leave Farleigh College with the necessary skill and
strategies to become a contributing member of society.
- To work closely with parents, thereby establishing a successful partnership between home and college.
- To recognise effort and positive gains, not merely measurable attainments.
Objectives to achieve these aims
- The curriculum is broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated, meeting the needs of the pupils on an individual basis.
- Asperger’s Syndrome pupils have a rolling
programme of social skills to promote the use of speech and language
skills in social contexts, to interact socially with others, to be more
aware of themselves and to be able to meet the demands of everyday
living.
- To provide a structure that recognises positive gains and effort.
- To provide a structured independence training programme.
- To provide extra-curricular activities.
