Design &Technology

Head of Department - Mr Josh Clark

Our KS3 pupils focus on Resistant Materials Technology following NC guidelines that allow progression across the Key Stage. Due to the small group sizes pupils are given the opportunity to develop their D&T capability through assignments in which they design and make products of their choice, at their own pace, relevant to their aptitude, ability and interests. They are also taught knowledge, skills and understanding of subject theory.

The KS4 pupils whom chose this subject as an examination option follow the GCSE and Entry-level specification, dependant upon their ability and aptitude and the time available to them. They are taught Resistant Materials Technology, which focuses on designing, and making products of their choice. The course is structured around a design & make activity (DMA) that follows the traditionally accepted design process,  (making full use of IT and CAD as and when appropriate) and which enables the pupils to develop and apply their designing and making skills.  The Coursework project is allocated 60% of the total examination marks with the remaining 40% allocated to the subject theory examination papers.

It is the intention of the D&T department to ensure that all pupils complete a well constructed well made and well finished product of which they can justifiably feel proud in order to build confidence & self-esteem. Farleigh pupils usually achieve comparatively high GCSE grades in D&T and our pupils have always traditionally enjoyed ‘working with their hands’.
