English
Head of Department - Steve Cowell The
individual needs of our students, both in terms of ability and learning
styles, are of paramount importance to the English department. At
Farleigh College we offer a flexible curriculum which allows for
individual growth, and development of skills in reading, writing,
speaking and listening. Students with dyslexia and other differing
learning needs are given both technical and 1:1 learning support, where
this is required to maximize their achievement. We are proud that a
proportion of our students achieve GCSE grades at A-C, even when they
may experience specific learning difficulties, or have a history of
perceived failure in this subject. Students are also entered for Entry
level qualifications, where this is deemed appropriate, and for SATs at
the end of Key Stage Three where this is thought to be of benefit to
the learner. We are keen to stress that English is, of course, the
language in which the majority of the school curriculum is taught. For
this reason we aim to make the curriculum attractive to our students,
with drama-focused activities and, wherever possible, an emphasis on
enjoyment in the classroom, and on occasional visits to the theatre and
poetry readings. As from September 2008 Farleigh College will be offering students the opportunity to study a full course in English Literature. The course runs parallel to our existing English course, and is designed to allow students with a particular interest/talent in the overall subject area to maximise their potential in the area of English studies.
