Exam Results
Farleigh College is very proud of the examination results we achieve. Many of the pupils that we take have a history of failing at school. We work with these young people to prepare them academically and socially for the stresses of SAT's and GCSE's. In Key Stage Four, we also prepare pupils for the DiDA qualifcation in ICT. This allows them to earn the equivalent of four GCSE's in this one subject alone! The following table summarises key data showing trends over the past five years. We are very proud of the progress we have made in this area in this time.
On a national level, school exam results are being assessed against the 'value added' from Key Stage 2 to 3, and Key Stage 3 to 4, rather than simply against the results achieved. When you consider the results achieved at Farleigh College using this methodology, we fall in the top 5% of schools in the country in both lists. The pupils often come to us having never been able to sit any examinations due to their difficulties and so through working with them to the point where they are able to sit examinations, and achieve good grades, we are bringing about a huge improvement. It is common for pupils leave us at the end of year 11 with the equivalent of 5 GCSE passes at grade C and above and we are proud to say that we have had pupils who have gained A* grades at GCSE and even moved onto AS Level study whilst still in year 11. It is important to stress that, although Farleigh College does place a high importance on examination results, we do not do so at the expense of pupils making the necessary progress with their social skills, communication and other needs. We leave space on the timetable for this and work with the residential care team, who continue our work in the evenings, and at weekends. As well as the year 11 leavers, we encourage many of our year 9 and 10 pupils to sit their examinations early where appropriate. This often results in these pupils being free to study further GCSE's, or even AS Levels in their final year. The examination results from the Year 11 leavers of 2007 can be viewed here (requires Acrobat Reader). |
