Geography

Head of Department - Charles Thompson

Geography is an exciting and dynamic area of study that stimulates students' interest in and appreciation of, their surroundings by exploring the variety of human and physical conditions on the earth's surface.

In KS3, the aim is to foster a sense of wonder at the beauty of
the world around them. Students are offered a variety of modules delivered using a range of appropriate individual and group stimuli and techn
iques that allow them to explore the location of the physical and human features of the earth and the processes, systems and inter-relationships that create and influence them. These modules not only look at places but also explore the relationships between the world and its peoples and how people affect, manage and sustain their environment. Students are encouraged to develop an informed concern about the quality of their environment and the future of the human habitat. This enhances their sense of responsibility for the care of the earth and its people.

Students are offered the opportunity to gain certification for enhanced study in this subject by taking a GCSE in Geography which may be undertaken in either one or two years.

When relevant, students in both Key Stages undertake geographical enquiry and decision-making exercises, where they gain first-hand experience of their immediate surroundings and how the environment can affect their lives.

Students gain the skills and knowledge in order for them to make informed decisions about the quality of the environment and the future of the human habitat. They form a sense of identity that supports the concept of responsible citizenship.
