News 2007/8
June 2008 Year 11 Leavers' Ceremony 17th June saw us saying a fond farewell to our year 11 students. A short presentation took place in the Manor Room after which a buffet lunch was provided for visiting parents and carers. Academic
tutors shared thoughts about their charges.
There was also a short slideshow bringing back memories of the students
throughout their years at the school.
June 2008 Leaver's Camp This year's leavers' camping trip took place from the 12th - 15th June. The group visited Cloud Farm in Devon, where they pitched their tents ready for a taste of outdoor life. The beautiful weather helped to ensure that everybody had a fantastic time doing activities such as quad biking, walking, swimming in the local river, surfing and, of couse toasting marsh mallows over an open fire. A highlight of this half-term occurred when several students from Farleigh College took part in an 11 a-side football match against other South Somerset special schools. The players who represented Farleigh were Sam, Jamie, Mike, Lewis and Matt. The boys played alongside The Priory School and Bridgewater College students, two of our fellow North Somerset schools. After a thrilling 90 minutes the final score was 4-3… to North Somerset! All five Farleigh representatives playing with outstanding drive and maturity to help guide us to the win. They all demonstrated excellent team working skills and had a great time in the process. Mike was the team’s goalkeeper, and he certainly showed off his acrobatic skills, throwing himself across goal to make some amazing saves. Lewis and Matt were positioned in defence and showed good composure to keep a lot of the pressure off their keeper. Jamie played a great midfield game, constantly closing down the opposition players, leaving them with no time on the ball. Sam was the team’s right winger, and he did a brilliant job providing the assist for one goal before minutes later putting his own name on the score sheet with an impressive piece of skill to ghost past a defender before scoring a vital goal. March 2008 Chickens! It's an Egg-citing time at Farleigh College as we welcome two new full time residents, Ginger and Pepper. However these are not students nor staff, they are chickens! For pictures of the chickens, please click here February 2008 Moodle (updated) Moodle is a website that will allow pupils to keep up to date with their work by using the Internet. If any lessons are missed or they've forgotten to take work home, they can log on and pick it up online. Most secondary schools now have a 'moodle' for the pupils to use and they have found it very useful. Hopefully, it will be just as good at Farleigh! Once it is set up, students will be given a username and password so they can have a little explore! The moodle website can be found at www.farleighmoodle.co.uk January 2008 New Build A
Work on the new build is progressing quickly despite a number of set
backs due to the bad weather conditions experience here at Farleigh.
The workers are currently in the process of erecting the exterior walls
of the building and should hopefully soon be moving on to starting the
roof in the near future.
A picture diary of the build can be found here December 2007 Christmas Carol Concert The 14th of December saw Farleigh's annual Christmas Carol Concert, which took place as usual at Mells Church. Many of our students (and staff) took part for the entertainment of parents and carers. This was followed by a mince pie and coffee back at Farleigh and a no doubt welcome break from school. Business Enterprise Scheme Some of our year nine students have been working hard this term making some lovely candle holders as part of the Business Enterprise Scheme. This culminated with a stall selling the results after the Christmas Carol concert. A healthy profit was made and shared among the participants. November 2007 Careers Fair A
Our year 11 students recently attended a Careers Fair at
the Bath and West Showground. The students thoroughly enjoyed the
day and were able to take part in interactive displays, discussing
their possible futures with potential employers/ educators including
the armed forces, the BBC, many engineering firms and also further
education colleges. Perhaps the highlight was the opportunity to
ride on various bits of plant including diggers.
New Build
Work has finally started on building our new classroom
block. There will be six classrooms and bathroom facilities.
The aim is for these to be completed by next Easter (2008).
September 2007 Work Experience In
September a number of our year 11 students took advantage of the
opportunity to have a work experience placement. We always try to
match students with their interests or preferences and this year
the placements were varied and included The Met Office at RAF
Lynham, Wellow Trekking Centre and childcare/nursery work at the Key
Centre and Little Oaks Nursery.
Year 10 students will be given the same opportunity to experience a work environment in the new year. |
