PE

Head of Department - Charles Thompson

In PE, we aim to promote an understanding of the many benefits of exercise, through a balanced range of relevant activities. Physical education is considered to facilitate access to cross-curricular themes, skills and dimensions, rather than a subject concerned exclusively with the acquisition of motor skills and techniques.

Pupils with AS can find the unwritten laws, rules and expectations of team games difficult to cope with. Many of our pupils have previously experienced failure in PE in the mainstream environment. A large proportion of our pupils also have Dyspraxia and experience fine or gross motor control difficulties

Every effort is made to design schemes of work based on the QCA Units that take the pupils’ individual needs into consideration. This involves focussing on individual sports such as rock climbing and kayaking.

Farleigh College offers a wide range of sports in Key Stage 3 and key Stage 4.

The G.C.S.E. group have the opportunity to develop these skills further, also trying different activities such as Golf, Kayaking, Climbing and Archery.

Following the exam board Edexcel - short course, the pupils will participate in a practical and theory exam.
Our aim in the P.E. department at Farleigh College is to address the physical, mental and social needs of the pupils with reference to their statement of educational needs.

The department liases with the occupational therapist, also working in conjunction with the speech & language therapist to offer additional support to meet the needs of the pupils. Working together, support is given to promote social skills, turn taking and communication in the P.E. setting.

We aim to raise levels of self-esteem and self-image, thus improving self-confidence.
